VIS Acquires Nanya's 8-Inch Fab

Vanguard International Semiconductor Co. (VIS), Nanya Technology Co., and Nanya's subsidiary Sumpro Electronic jointly announced the acquisition of Sumpro by VIS for NT$2.2 billion (US$71.9 million; US$1=NT$30.335), including machinery equipment, spare and accessory parts, and inventories (for NT$1.8 billion), and a 8-inch foundry (for NT$400 million), which is owned by Nanya and currently run by Sumpro, reported Economic Daily News on March 15. Sumpro's manufacturing process is mainly based on 110-nm technology, with 65-nm technology of its most advanced. Currently, Sumpro's monthly capacity is around 40,000 units, with a utilization rate between 50% and 60%. The deal is expected to add 400,000 units per year to VIS' 8-inch capacity in the initial stage, said the report.
